The Flicorno d’Oro is a competition for amateur bands, sub-divided into categories and judged by celebrities from the international world of music and bands.
The competition will take place at Riva del Garda every year, in Spring.
All non-professional bands can take part in the competition, with no limit to the number of musicians included. Each band may use a number of professional musicians that does not exceed 10% of the entire group of players in the band. Professional musicians means: teachers in Conservatories or authorized music schools, players permanently employed by an orchestra or with a contract of at least 12 months with a professional band or orchestra.
What categories take part in the competition?
There are six categories: Excellence, Superior, First, Second, Third, Youth.
The Youth Band category includes representative youth bands or musical bands formed by music schools or Musical Orientation courses organized by band groups. The age limit is 18, players up to 25 years old may be used for a maximum of 10% of the players taking part. More info about age limits here.
In the non-competing category bands receive a private written assessment from a qualified international jury, without entering the Flicorno d’Oro International Band Competition. For participants in this category a judgement is also assigned which bands can use to compare their level with the six categories of the Flicorno d’Oro. The spirit of this category is that of assisting bands in approaching the Flicorno d’Oro. There are no prizes for those who register in this category.
The fee for each band taking part in the competition, and for the non-competing category, is Euro 250, not including the score for the chosen pieces, which must be provided by the bands themselves; the fee must be sent by cheque, paid on-line or by postal order to Flicorno d’Oro - via Concordia, 23 – C.P. 108 - 38066 RIVA DEL GARDA (TN) by the final date for registration.
Yes, each category in the competition will be ranked according to the marks given. The first three in each category will receive musical instruments offered by Yamaha Musica Italia, as described in the prize section. The band whose highest marks exceed 90 will receive the overall First Prize. All bands taking part will receive a participation diploma.
The results are announced when all the contestants have performed, during the prize giving Ceremony.
No, a conductor can conduct only one band in the competition.
Yes, a conductor can conduct a band in the competition and one or more bands in the non-competing category.
Musicians can play in two or more bands taking part in the competition in different categories. They cannot play in two bands taking part in the competition in the same category.

Registration applications must arrive by 15th November 2011.
Admission to the competition and to the non-competing category is subject to the incontestable decision of the management. Admission will be communicated in writing by 30th January 2012. In the event of failed admission, the entire registration fee will be returned. .
The bands taking part in the competition must perform the compulsory piece for the relevant category, from an original score, not photocopied, and a piece selected from a list of pieces for the category involved. The compulsory pieces and the list of pieces for the category involved can be viewed in the Competition Pieces section.
A short piece can be performed for a maximum of 2 minutes as a warm-up which will not be included in the competition.
The order of appearance will be established by management according to technical/organizational needs, and will be communicated in writing to the participating bands.
In the event of special needs, a preference for a date on which to perform can be indicated on registration. The organization will draw up a calendar that takes into account everyone’s needs. However, there is no guarantee that all requests will be granted. The calendar drawn up by the organization is binding.
The Director recommends taking part with the pieces chosen for the category in which the band is registered. However, a piece from the next category up can be performed, subject to communication of such intention.
For bands registered in the Excellence Category the programme presented, including the warm-up and compulsory pieces, shall not exceed 45 minutes. Presence on the stage is limited to 50 minutes.
For bands registered in the categories Superior and First, the programme presented, including the warm-up and compulsory pieces, shall not exceed 40 minutes. Presence on the stage is limited to 45 minutes.
For bands registered in the categories Second, Third and Youth Band, the programme presented, including the warm-up and compulsory pieces, shall not exceed 30 minutes Presence on the stage is limited to 35 minutes.
Bands which exceed these times will be penalised.
Bands taking part in the non-competing category shall perform two independently chosen pieces from an original score, not photocopied. At least one of the two pieces shall be an original piece for bands.
A short piece can be performed for a maximum of 2 minutes as a warm-up.
For these bands the programme presented, including the warm-up piece and the two independently chosen pieces, shall not exceed 30 minutes. Presence on the stage is limited to 35 minutes. .
